Cooking Up A Storm With Jenny Bristow
One of the school's Year 11 Home Economics classes won 2nd place in a recent cooking competition. Celebrity Chef Jenny Bristow challenged schools to create a nutritional meal for runners taking part in the Belfast City Marathon 2014.
Representatives from the class had the pleasure of cooking for Jenny and members of the public at Podium for Sport, Belfast. This event was to raise the profile of the CLIC Sargent charity.
The pupils' recipe of steamed ginger fish served with egg-fried rice was a hit amongst the spectators.
Ewan cooks up a Storm!
On Saturday Year 11 Home Economics student Ewan McCartney represented Comber Rotary Club at the semi-final of the Young Chef competition which took place in Grosvenor Grammar School.
Even though he didn’t get through to the all-Ireland final, he cooked up a storm and presented three delicious plates of food. His dessert "a white chocolate and berry souffle" was a particular hit with the judges.
Home Economics Trip To Finnebrogue
Home Economics pupils visited Finnebrogue Estate recently to help further their knowledge of food production and awareness of product development. As well as having a full factory tour, the Finnebrogue Technical and Product Development team led a number of workshops on brand design, sausage recipe development, packaging design and functionality and ingredient identification. Pupils also witnessed a demonstration on the functionality of a new piece of packaging for the Marks and Spencer Christmas range. The pupils submitted a competition entry for each workshop theme and three winners were chosen.
The prize for Best Brand was awarded to Emma Rodgers for her Seasonal Sausage Co. brand. The Best Packaging Design was awarded to Tom Hogg for his Choosy Fruit Smoothy on a Reel concept and Varsha Parthasarathy was awarded best new sausage recipe, the ingredients for which cannot be shared as the product may hit the shelves!
All the pupils who were selected for an award were given a £15 i-tunes voucher and Varsha will visit the Marks and Spencer head office in London to show her product concept to the Meat Developer, Jemma Davis.
Pupils visit CAFRE
Home Economics pupils had the opportunity to "Feed their Mind" at CAFRE's Loughry Campus.
Pupils had the opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive sessions including: sausage making and chocolate production.
Pupils also had the opportunity to challenge and expand theirknowledge with tutorials on food packaging, acids in foods and nutrition for sport
