A-Level Home Economics (CCEA)
At Down High School we follow the CCEA specification for GCE Home Economics which is made up of two parts: AS and A2 Level. The AS can be taken as an independent qualification. However, students who wish to obtain the full Advanced GCE qualification must complete the AS course as well as the A2 course.
The specification is made up of four units. Students are required to study two units for AS and a further two units for the full Advanced GCE course. All units are compulsory.

AS Home EconomicsAS 1: Nutrition for Optimal Health This unit requires the study of macro and micro-nutrients and other dietary constituents. Nutritional requirements and current dietary recommendations across the life span are also studied. Assessment consists of one external examination comprising of short and structured questions and lasting for 1 hour 30 minutes. You will study each of the following topics: Proteins, Fats, Carbohydrates, Vitamins, Minerals, Micro-Minerals, NSP, water and nutritional considerations across the life-span.
AS 2: Priority Health Issues
This unit requires the study of current research in relation to diet and health, mental health and sexual health. Targets, strategies, initiatives and campaigns for optimising health are also studied. You will study each of the following topics: Cardiovascular disease, overweight and obesity, Diabetes, Cancer, Diet and Health Strategies including: Eating and Health - A Food and Nutrition Strategy for Northern Ireland, A Physical Activity Strategy for Northern Ireland, Promoting Mental Health Strategy and Action Plan.

A2 Home EconomicsA2 1: Consumer Issues This unit requires the study of consumer issues prevalent in today’s society. It involves consideration of factors which affect the ability of consumers to make informed decisions and manage available resources. You will study the following topics: Food safety issues for the consumer investigating additives, chemical contaminants and bacteria. Ethical Issues for the Consumer investigating Genetic Modifcation, organic foods, fairtrade, local and seasonal foods. Financial management issues for the consumer investigating financial management strategies, credit, savings and legislation. Consumer information investigating food labelling and food advertising. Consumer protection and redress investigating the work of various consumer organisations, the small claims court, codes of practice and consumer protection when buying online. A2 1: Consumer IssuesThis unit requires the submission of a report on a research based activity which should not exceed 4,000 words. The chosen research area should come from AS 1, AS 2 or A2 1. The assignment should provide opportunities for students to demonstrate appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills demanded by the research process.
