Charlie Hutton takes 3rd place!
On 11th February at Belfast Metropolitan College, Charlie Hutton, joined eight young, aspiring chefs at the Northern Ireland Regional Final that showcased their fantastic cooking, budgeting and time management skills.
Springboard’s
FutureChef, is a nationwide culinary initiative which is delivered in over 550 schools
nationwide. The main goal of the FutureChef is to assist young people aged 12-16
to learn the vital life skills of cooking and understanding nutrition as well
as providing invaluable insight into and inspiration for building a career
within the hospitality industry.
The talented hopefuls began their
challenge and have already succeeded in two previous rounds of competition as
they cooked for a place in this year’s final.
Well done to Charlie Hutton (Year 8) who finished a highly commendable 3rd in the NI Final of the Springboard Future Chef Competition 2015 and was most notably the youngest competitor.
Livestock and Meat Commission visit DHS
Throughout January and February 2015 all year 10 classes and year 11 Home Economics students were treated to a cookery demonstration from the Livestock and Meat Commission.
Patricia McClean prepared several dishes for the pupils demonstrating some healthy recipes using meat and explained the nutritional importance of meat in the diet. She also spoke to the pupils about career opportunities within the food industry. Pupils also had the opportunity to sample the dishes she prepared.
LMC is at the center of the Northern Ireland red meat industry supplying information right across the supply chain. LMC services the Northern Ireland red meat industry by delivering up to the minute market insight allowing those involved in the industry to make informed decisions about their business. LMC also educates the consumer about the true nutritional value of red meat in the diet and promotes beef and sheep-meat in home and export markets. LMC manages the Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assurance Scheme and the beef and sheep classification service.
Pupils had the opportunity to taste Thai beef curry with firecracker rice and Yummy Lamb Curry!

Tasty Careers

Year 11 pupils had the opportunity to hear about exciting career prospects within the Agri- Food sector with visiting speaker, Geoff Lambe from Tasty Careers.
Food NI
Year 11 GCSE Home Economics pupils welcomed Lynn Savage from Food NI in January 2015.
Food NI provides a single promotional voice for Northern Ireland’s food and drink. They work to enhance the reputation of Northern Ireland’s food and drink through the Taste of Ulster and Our Food So Good messages.
Lynn shared some valuable information with the pupils which will be useful for their Controlled Assessment.
Active Kids Get Cooking
January 2015
Well done to all year 10 pupils on the successful completion of Sainsbury's Active Kids Get Cooking Module. Pupils worked in pairs to produce a main course for two people. A variety of dishes were produced representing many different global cuisines.
